The starting point in finite element analysis is the creation of a suitable analytical model to represent the structure to be analyzed. This requires that the underlying geometry information is available as either CAD data or as scanned STL data. The creation of an FE model from detailed geometry requires experience and skill. The model should include the salient features of the structure and avoid unnecessary detail. This is to a large extent a discipline dependent process.
