High Fidelity FE Dummy Models for CAE Vehicle Safety Analysis
In 2017, by contractual agreement with ATD-MODELS GmbH, CDH AG acquired the rights to market, distribute and support ATD Hybrid 3 dummy and finite element (FE) impactor models in North America and Japan. ATD-MODELS GmbH is a specialist in the development of high-quality FE models for vehicle safety analysis. The company was founded in 2009 by experts with years of experience in dummy development and occupant-safety simulation. ATD-MODELS GmbH develops highly accurate FE models in close cooperation with the German and other world-wide automobile industry partners. ATD FE models are used in the virtual development process for occupant and pedestrian protection engineering calculations.
ATD MODEL of the advanced Pedestrian Leg Impactor (aPLI)
At the Euro-NCAP board meeting held on 7th February 2019 members voted to adopt the advanced Pedestrian Legform Impactor (aPLI) with simplified upper body mass for future Euro NCAP pedestrian safety testing. The design specifications and associated injury probability functions were discussed by the international experts of ISO, TC22, SC36, WG5 and WG6. Physical models, designed and developed by Cellbond, have been subjected to rigorous worldwide testing, and exhibit excellent stability and repeatability characteristics.
In year 2018, ATD-MODELS GmbH began development of an FE model of the aPLI in close cooperation with Cellbond, the hardware developer and manufacturer. The ATD-aPLI is an accurate FE representation of the Cellbond aPLI hardware model, including characteristics such as a pre-stressed tissue, neoprene skin and detailed geometry implementation. The FE model was successfully validated against physical measurements in General Vehicle Test Rig (GVTR) in 0, and +/-30-degree angles. The ATD-aPLI is available for explicit FE codes ABAQUS*, LS-DYNA* and PAM-CRASH* and enables users to perform accurate FE simulations to meet latest pedestrian protection consumer regulations.
Regulations defining aPLI use:
C-NCAP Pedestrian Protecting Testing (start from 2022)
Euro NCAP Pedestrian Protecting Testing (start from 2023)
KNCAP Pedestrian Protecting Testing (start from 2023)
JNCAP Pedestrian Protecting Testing (start from 2024)

ATD Models Features:
- High accuracy owing to physics-based modeling techniques and validation to test hardware results
- FE models available for industry standard explicit FE codes ABAQUS*, LS-DYNA*, PAM-CRASH* and RADIOSS*
- Commonality of modeling standards for all dummy models
- Uniform discretization, nomenclature and numbering systems
- Same scripts for pre and post processing
- Same session file and application procedures
- Full utilization of code-specific features of each solver
Advantages to Users:
- Systematic title nomenclature refers to the assembly groups
- Prefix in each title description allows a fast adjustment to the nomenclature of the load case
- Numeration not overlapping the assembly groups
- Advantage in pre and post processing
- Allows selection of assembly parts and groups
- Each assembly group close defined for itself
- Definition regarding the master, e.g. contacts relate to the assembly group
